Tough Choices

Working parents have to rely on either daycare or a nanny to take care of their child in their absence. Their intention is with a nanny, their child can get individualized attention and the child can play in their own home and neighbourhood during the day.

Though they are aware of the fact that with a nanny taking care of the child, their child misses the social and natural interaction that takes place in a place like daycare where there are more children to move and play with , the only thing that makes them to choose a nanny is that their child will get one-to-one care which we don't have in average daycares. But some nannies don't provide care and affection as they are expected to do. Few cases where the nannies have been arrested for the child abuse.

We all are familiar about the Boston Nanny murder case which generated more media attention than any other trial where a nanny 'Louis Woodward' was convicted in 1997 for a second degree shaking & murder of a 8-month old Matthew Eapen. Here is
a conversation between the prosecutor attorney and the nanny

A Hollywood couple noticed that their infant daughter seemed unsettled near her nanny, the couple had a suspicion and
installed a nanny-cam and noticed some very disturbing videos of the nanny shaking the child and snapping her head back and forth. The police released the video tape that clearly shows the nanny shaking and slamming the baby in the kitchen floor. The nanny was arrested and spent 2 years in jail but earlier this year, the case was thrown out and the prosecutors declared the video evidence was worthless and set the nanny free.

In another case , a nanny was sentenced to four years in prison for shaking and injuring a 2 month old under her care. The newborn suffered a multiple skull fractures and massive brain damage. These incidents must caution other parents who have their children in someone else's care. Nanny or daycare , nothing can be compared to a mom's care and affection . Remember a nanny is an acting mother not a real mother. Note one point, I am not judging parents who hire a nanny or daycare, I know everybody has their own financial needs, career goals but these scary video tapes make 'stay-at-home' vs 'work outside home' an issue to discuss.

There are expensive daycares available where you have more caring eyes on your child and lots of children to play with. Nowadays some daycares even have cameras through which we can watch our baby from work area which gives you a peace of mind.

Working from home can be an option especially when your baby is an infant. I know this is not an option for everyone but Thanks to the computer & internet technology, you can work as well as spending time with your baby.

Before hiring any nanny, the parents have to spend more time doing background checks to know more about their history. They can also spend some more time with the nanny and their child together to build a trusting relationship with the nanny and make sure your child gets good care from them.

A nanny or a day care, whichever you choose, it's a tough choice for any mom.
